MODIFYING THE INTERNALS OF A PRE-FORMED PIPE STEM

STEP 1: Cut the tenon and fit to the pipe before proceeding further. STEP 2: Drill from tenon side using a 5/32" tapered drill bit to about 1" from the end of the stem.

STEP 3: Using 1/16" drill bit in a rotary tool (such as a Dremel), insert the bit all the way into the existing draft hole and apply side pressure as the bit is pulled out. Repeat several times per side to create the flared slot. STEP 4: Using a modified saw, clean up the edges of the flared slot.

STEP 5: Using needle files, continue to clean up the slot surfaces. STEP 6: Rub a fluffy pipe cleaner on a block of tripoli to deposit the tripoli onto the pipe cleaner.

STEP 7: Chuck the pipe cleaner into a rotary tool and insert into the stem before turning on the tool. Polish the internal airway and slot. STEP 8: Continue shaping the button and thinning the stem as desired.
